In the second chapter when he mentioned trouble with fires.
Andy never came over or went out with Doug.
there were little clues along the way. the shouted argument with the neighbor, the odd looks his parents would give when he mentioned Andy, the evasiveness ont he subject of the abandoned house. i was reminded of a novel called "The Other" by Thomas Tryon about a pair of twins who get into trouble... anyone read that?
It was just weird they never hung out.
I figured it out by about the 3rd Chapter. Why would one of the "popular" kids want to hang out with a strange kid?
it was weird when andy seemed to show up when he was alone. not when anyone else was around. it was like to everyone else he didn't exist, even though he was supposed to be one of the most popular guys in school. he couldn't even be mentioned without a scene. this book was generally odd. odd but really, really, really good!
