I think it was the bridge between him and reality.

Dougie says that the bridge connects things...
Dougie past to Dougie future...
One teacher even tells Dougie that "a writer is like a bridge builder...building a bridge between the writer and reader."
The bridge may be a symbol for how Dougie really wants to get on with his life. He can "cross that bridge" and be free of the obsession.
Interesting comments. I didn't think anything of it. just that it was an obsession.
and it was while under the influence of the Proloftin that he partially destroyed the bridge, both the one made of matches and the one to his past.
I think it was a bridge between him and a place where he would like to be at. Also, you have to be pretty obsessive to complete something with such detail..
It was a bridge between himself and reality. He wanted to cross the bridge, but he, himself, was holding back.
