I think they were in denial that something was wrong with their child. The father just yelled and the mom just did her puzzles.
They didn't seem to want to deal with Dougie's "problem."
No parent would be able to deal with that situation. They wanted him to be normal and tried to pay a counsler to make him normal again.
Just like any parents, not sure how to make things good again
It's not hard to see where Doug gets his weirdness. A father who does yardwork in a suit and tie?? Some people are too intelligent and that can make them seem very strange.
